Olabanke Goriola

Olabanke Oyinkansola Goriola is a Nigerian multidisciplinary artist-scholar, Doctoral Researcher in Performance Studies at Northwestern University, USA, and Founder and Executive Director of The Shade Initiative for Cultural and Social Empowerment, a Nigerian nonprofit challenging colorism/skin-tone discrimination and skin-bleaching practices through research, education, cultural intervention, and public advocacy. Her doctoral research explores colorism, skin-bleaching practices, and dark-skinned women’s visibility in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. She is the author of publications in The Republic and co-author of “Monsters You Made” in The Black Scholar (2024), and her work has been featured in Vanguard and This Day Nigerian Newspapers. She is the creator of “Be Comfortable in Your Skin”, a documentary campaign that challenges colorism and celebrates dark skin in Nigeria.
